Conceptualizing and Visual Depiction of Complex Realist Analyses

Friday, October 19th, 2018
9:45am - 4:30pm (Lunch Provided)
Foresight Centre, University of Liverpool
1 Brownlow St. Liverpool, UK

A realist analysis can unearth a considerable amount of complexity which, consequently, may be difficult to convey in the final report, publication, and other knowledge dissemination products. In this workshop, participants will individually and collectively explore various ways of conceptualizing, modelling and conveying complex realist analyses. We will begin by studying different ways in which the Context-Mechanism-Outcome configuration is used to visually depict generative causation and causal pathways. Text-based depiction of findings using CMO configurations as well as other forms of visual modelling will be explored. The aim of the workshop is to have participants reflect on and practice conveying complex evidence in clear terms without compromising the integrity of the analysis. Building one's capacity to conceptualize and visually display CMO configurations will improve analytical thinking, clarify realist methodological principles and provide motivation for advancing projects.

Participants may enroll in one or more of any of the four workshops offered in the training week.
