Realist Methodology Online Tutoring and Education (ReMOTE) Workshop:

"Constructing Rival Programme Theories in Realist Inquiry"

Delivered by:
Justin Jagosh, Ph.D
Director, Centre for Advancement in Realist Evaluation and Synthesis (CARES)

Description:
This workshop explains the importance and advantage of constructing rival programme theories when conducting a realist evaluation or synthesis. Rival theories hypothesize that programmes may work well in some contexts but not others, or that programmes work differently in implementation in contrast to how they are intended to work.

Rivalry is a key concept in Realist Evaluation [see for example: Pawson, R. (2013) Science of Evaluation: A Realist Manifesto. Sage]. Framing realist programme theories with rivalry is advantageous as it increases objective and creative thinking concerning the range of possibilities and possible causal pathways involved in the success or failure of programmes. Understanding rivalry in realist inquiry is an important foundational training goal that helps the inquirer envision realist protocol development, data collection processes and analysis using the CMO configuration. This workshop will include preparatory readings and a theory development exercise. An optional follow-up group consultation session will take place one week following the workshop.

Instructions:
Participants can choose to register for either the training workshop + group consultation* (£195) or training workshop only (£125).
