Realist Methodology Online Tutoring and Education (ReMOTE) Workshop:

"Incorporating Middle-Range Theory in Realist Evaluation and Synthesis"

Delivered by:
Justin Jagosh, Ph.D
Director, Centre for Advancement in Realist Evaluation and Synthesis (CARES)

Description:
This workshop explains how to incorporate middle-range theory (MRT) in applications of Realist Methodology. In evaluating programmes (e.g., policies, services, guidelines), Pawson and Tilley (1997) have argued for the importance of theorizing the logic of programmes in relation to ‘what works, for whom, under what circumstances, and how’.

This involves using a creative retroductive process to develop original theory statements or pooling from the existing theoretical literature or a combination of the two. The aim of this workshop is to increase capacity for incorporating MRT in project design and analysis.

We will examine the origins of middle-range theory, explore the relationship between MRT and realist programme theories, as well as the steps involved in incorporating theories from the literature to inform research design and analysis. There will be a short practice exercise and opportunity to ask questions. An optional follow-up group consultation session will take place one week following the workshop.

Instructions:
Participants can choose to register for either the training workshop + group consultation* (£195) or training workshop only (£125).

*Group consultation is a 2.5 hour session one week after the training workshop. In that session, each participant will receive a 20 minute consultation on their work-in-progress to ask questions and receive expert feedback based on workshop material and other questions. They will also be able to listen and partake in the consultation of others for vicarious learning. Please note that spaces for group consultations are limited.

The workshop is open to anyone, however, some basic understanding of realist concepts will be beneficial. Participants new to realist methodology can view the following video for an introductory overview in advance of the workshop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=11&v=QrneOfFXzx0
