Realist Methodology Online Tutoring and Education (ReMOTE) Workshop:
Mechanisms and the CMO (context-mechanism-outcome) Configuration
Justin Jagosh, Ph.D
Director, Centre for Advancement in Realist Evaluation and Synthesis (CARES)
This workshop focuses on the concept of 'mechanism' and how it is used in the context-mechanism-outcome configuration. Mechanism has been defined by Pawson and Tilley as the way in which participants and stakeholders respond to resources. However it is common for people doing realist projects to experience confusion around the definition and use of this central concept.
In this workshop we will look at the origins of the mechanism concept for social science and the various ways in which it has been defined and operationalized in the key realist evaluation literature. Participants will also explore usages of the CMO configuration and how mechanisms fit therein. We will also learn how mechanisms can be theorized and tested, and their transferability to other settings and contexts.
There is an option for a follow-up consultation session one week following the workshop. Please see instructions below.
Participants can register for either the training workshop + consultation* (£225) or training workshop only (£140).
*Consultation is an optional private 45 minute guidance session to be scheduled one week after the training workshop. For that session, the participant may submit questions about applying the workshop material to their research projects and will receive feedback. Please note that there are only three spaces for consultation for each on-line workshop, and participants registered for consultation will receive an appointment time within the scheduled time listed below.
The workshop is open to anyone, however, some basic understanding of realist concepts will be beneficial. Participants new to realist methodology can view the following video for an introductory overview in advance of the workshop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=11&v=QrneOfFXzx0
