Realist Methodology Online Tutoring and Education (ReMOTE) Workshop:

Incorporating Middle-Range Theory in Realist Evaluation and Synthesis

Delivered by:
Justin Jagosh, Ph.D
Director, Centre for Advancement in Realist Evaluation and Synthesis (CARES)

This workshop explains how to incorporate middle-range theory (MRT) in applications of Realist Methodology. In evaluating programmes (e.g., policies, services, guidelines), Pawson and Tilley (1997) have argued for the importance of theorizing the logic of programmes in relation to ‘what works, for whom, under what circumstances, and how’.

This involves using a creative retroductive process to develop original theory statements or pooling from the existing theoretical literature or a combination of the two. The aim of this workshop is to increase capacity for incorporating MRT in project design and analysis.

We will examine the origins of middle-range theory, explore the relationship between MRT and realist programme theories, as well as the steps involved in incorporating theories from the literature to inform research design and analysis. There will be a short practice exercise and opportunity to ask questions.

There is an option for a follow-up consultation session one week following the workshop. Please see instructions below.

Participants can register for either the training workshop + consultation* (£225) or training workshop only (£140).

*Consultation is an optional private 45 minute guidance session to be scheduled one week after the training workshop. For that session, the participant may submit questions about applying the workshop material to their research projects and will receive feedback. Please note that there are only three spaces for consultation for each on-line workshop, and participants registered for consultation will receive an appointment time within the scheduled time listed below.

The workshop is open to anyone, however, some basic understanding of realist concepts will be beneficial. Participants new to realist methodology can view the following video for an introductory overview in advance of the workshop:
