Realist Methodology Online Tutoring and Education (ReMOTE) Workshop:

Constructing Rival Programme Theories in Realist Inquiry

Delivered by:
Justin Jagosh, Ph.D
Director, Centre for Advancement in Realist Evaluation and Synthesis (CARES)

This workshop explains the importance and advantage of constructing rival programme theories when conducting a realist evaluation or synthesis. Rival theories hypothesize that programmes may work well in some contexts but not others, or that programmes work differently in implementation in contrast to how they are intended to work.

Rivalry is a key concept in Realist Evaluation [see for example: Pawson, R. (2013) Science of Evaluation: A Realist Manifesto. Sage]. Framing realist programme theories with rivalry is advantageous as it increases objective and creative thinking concerning the range of possibilities and possible causal pathways involved in the success or failure of programmes. Understanding rivalry in realist inquiry is an important foundational training goal that helps the inquirer envision realist protocol development, data collection processes and analysis using the CMO configuration.

There is an option for a follow-up consultation session one week following the workshop. Please see instructions below.

Participants can register for either the training workshop + consultation* (£225) or training workshop only (£140).

*Consultation is an optional private 45 minute guidance session to be scheduled one week after the training workshop. For that session, the participant may submit questions about applying the workshop material to their research projects and will receive feedback. Please note that there are only three spaces for consultation for each on-line workshop, and participants registered for consultation will receive an appointment time within the scheduled time listed below.

The workshop is open to anyone, however, some basic understanding of realist concepts will be beneficial. Participants new to realist methodology can view the following video for an introductory overview in advance of the workshop:
