Designing a Rapid Realist Review-Online
January 21st-22nd & 25th-26th, 2027
Designing a Rapid Realist Review is a training course for applying realist methodology to the task of rapid literature review. Comprising 12 hours of training, the programme will help participants envision and design rapid realist reviews intended for completion in short timeframes (i.e., 4 to 12 months). Rapid realist reviews are often used in preliminary work packages of larger research projects using realist evaluation, or as one-off studies for quick learning and urgent decision-making. However clarity of focus and transparent use of acceleration strategies are needed to ensure findings reflect realist logic of analysis, and are robust and pragmatic.
Through the workshop participants will learn how to:
-engage with realist thinking, both deductively and inductively during the rapid review timeframe
-use quota-based record screening and other stopping rules during database screening;
-co-produce an appraisal journal to efficiently extract explanatory insights with rigour and transparency;
-Use diverse data sources to construct context-mechanism-outcome configurations;
-Translate programme theories from the rapid realist review to subsequent phases of research;
-Describe rapid realist review design in grant proposals
-Convey findings and publish from the rapid realist review.
There are no pre-requisites for this course. However upon registration, participants will be provided with recommended readings for preparation.
