The 2024 CARES Advanced Study in Realist Methodology is a six-day intensive comprising 18 hours of training for professionals and Ph.D students using realist methodology in research and evaluation projects. The training event is facilitated by Dr. Justin Jagosh.
This course will review fundamental principles and provide advanced tips for building retroductive capacity as well as developing and testing theories in data collection and analysis. Participants can expect to improve their understanding of foundational realist concepts including 'mechanisms' and the 'context-mechanism-outcome' configuration. Candidates must be working on projects involving realist methodology and should be willing to participate in group consultation and mentorship. There will be opportunity to receive individualized attention on projects, time to work through research design issues and discuss challenges.
Eligibility requirements for applicants:
1. Active work on a project using realist methodology across any stage of research: theory development, protocol development, data collection, analysis, theory testing, modelling, and synthesis.
2. If you have not attended a previous CARES realist methodology training workshop, you will be provided with a few papers on realist methodology will be required to write a 100-250 word answer to the question “What is the purpose of realist methodology?”
