In this four-day workshop participants will learn basic principles of realist qualitative interviewing and practice interviewing skills. The goal is to build capacity in realist theory-driven interviewing to collect rich and informative data that does not bias interviewee responses.
Participants will be guided on how to carry interviews into discussions that support ontological depth and unearth causal mechanisms while remaining trustworthy. General principles of realism and realist methodology will be provided along with a look at key papers on realist qualitative interviewing (Pawson 1996, Manzano 2016). Participants will explore implementing these principles with examples. There will be an opportunity to practice interview technique and receive feedback.
Time permitting, we will look at how to analyze qualitative data derived from realist qualitative interviewing. Improving one's technique for qualitative interviewing in realist evaluation will enhance the quality of data collected and facilitate the iterative and ongoing analysis using CMO configurations.
